SA-4 Known Issues

  • Unavailable Output Tubes
The large 6LF6 output tubes are not readily available -- few such horizonatal sweep tubes are. The SA-4 does not have provisions for individually adjusting the bias of each tube; instead, Counterpoint originally bought these tubes in large quantities and matched them at the factory. There are no replacement tubes suitable for use in this amplifier. Who knew in 1984 that this amp would still be considered one of the most transparent amps ever made?
    Solution
Modify amplifier to permit individual adjustments for each output tube to allow random 6LF6 tubes to be used. For the do-it-yourselfer, the essential information is here. We can do this work, too. See the SA-4 Upgrades Page for information on the Alta Vista Audio SA-4 Bias Upgrade.

  • Screen Regulators Susceptable to Failure
Despite built-in current limiting, arcing in any output tube can cause a screen regulator to fail.
    Solution
Repair it. You can order a Service Manual and do it yourself or send it to me. See Repair Service
